December 13, 2014, Emma Ness says:

I really do hope that mascara and eyeshadow are not being used as synonyms.

December 15, 2014, Di Platts says:

I'm afraid they probably are. I certainly need an E in that position

December 15, 2014, Gordon Gray says:

I don't know why I didn't use 'make-up' instead - it would have provided more of a challenge - and generated two fewer comments!

December 19, 2014, Bill Brakes says:

Enjoying the puzzle Gordon! I'm finding it harder than usual because the first letters are needing more work. That's a good thing! Thanks.

December 19, 2014, Di Platts says:

Like Bill Brakes, I'm finding it quite a challenge to discover the initial letters, not helped by barking up (ha ha)totally the wrong tree to start with.

December 20, 2014, Annamaria Macchi says:

Is anyone else struggling to find a homophone between 31 and 35?

December 20, 2014, janet pointon says:

I wonder whether Gordon has really confused eyelid with eyelash. Can't see why he says make up would be more challenging

December 20, 2014, Di Platts says:

I was struggling with the homophone 31-35, then the penny dropped! That's the great thing about this puzzle...a real sense of achievement when each hurdle is cleared. I've almost finished, but am puzzled (!) by the part of speech implied by the answer to 35(c), and also the apparent appearance of the same word twice. Anyone else?

December 21, 2014, Mark Spencer says:

I have the same word for two answers. Is that permissible? I note that the first entry in this blog is from Emma Ness and wonder if we are related?

December 22, 2014, Emma Ness says:

I too have a repeated answer. I also fear that there is, according to Chambers, a spelling mistake in 36a. In answer to Mark Spencer I doubt that we are related. My maiden name was Lewis. My Dad, John, says I've gone downmarket.

December 22, 2014, Gordon Gray says:

I've slipped up! Had I repeated the word one more time I could have gone to Channel 4 for sponsorship!

December 23, 2014, Mary says:

Is no 2 c 11 letters?

December 23, 2014, Emma Ness says:

It is in my copy, and it fits the answer I've got. The only outstanding problem I can see is the spelling mistake in 36a. I hope that helps Mary.

December 23, 2014, Mark Spencer says:

Brilliant Emma. I'd fallen for the spelling mistake hook, line and sinker! I was about to submit my entry. I'll hold off pending the correction. Thank you.

December 24, 2014, Gordon Gray says:

Emma Ness makes a good point with respect to 36a. She suggests that the question would have been better clued _ _ AGS _ _ _ and I agree.

December 24, 2014, Mary says:

Thank you. Back to the drawing board!

December 26, 2014, Hilary says:

So are there any changes to the clue or question in 36a please?

December 26, 2014, Gordon Gray says:

At this stage, I will accept the closely related answers for either _ _ AGM _ _ or _ _ AGS _ _ _

December 27, 2014, Emma Ness says:

At this stage? I fear my interest has waned.

December 29, 2014, Mark Spencer says:

I'm concerned that 33b, 34b, 35b & 36b are inconsistent with the rest of the puzzle.

December 29, 2014, Di Platts says:

In my copy 2c has 8 letters only, Mary and Emma. In my Chambers both spellings of 36a are acceptable, and anyway there are only 7 letters, so I don't see how both could fit in.As for 33b etc I don't see the problem, Mark.

December 30, 2014, Mark Spencer says:

Di, Gordon tells me he is going to publish corrections to all points identified, including the 33b to 36b error, so I should await the corrections. I fear the 2c question may have been confused with 3c. 2c is 8 letters - 3c 11.

December 30, 2014, Di Platts says:

I've already sent off my entry! So I hope there are no further corrections.

December 30, 2014, Emma Ness says:

My answers to 1b and 33a are reflected rather than clued, is that permissible? Is 36a now _ _ AGS _ _ _ ?
